The San Jose Rockets hosted teams from San Jose, Hollister, and Fresno for a Power Wheelchair Soccer tournament at their home gym in Alviso yesterday. The teams were evenly matched with a day full of agressive, spirited, and passionate play from the athletes.
In their first match of the day, the Rockets drew to a 2-2 tie against the San Jose Steamrollers, a team with whom they share a practice facility. The Rockets goals were scored by Ryan Connolly and Matthew Arensdorf with assists by Arensdorf and Kenny Tran. The two goals scrored by the Steamrollers were provided by Jenny Mitchell.
The Rockets faced off against the tough Hollister Free Wheelers for their second match. The defense played tough and the game remained scoreless for the first 13 minutes of the game, but Hollister then scored two goals in the final mintues of the first half, and one more goal in the closing minutes of the 2nd half. The Free Wheelers scores were delivered by Michele Rosado, Shane Arzie, and Tim McPheeters with assists by Chad Arzie, and Chad Bojorquez. The Rockets only score of the game came with just four minutes remaining on a perfectly executed corner kick from Ryan Connolly to Allen Arquiza.
The final match of the day pitted the San Jose Rockets against the equally competitive Central Valley Ghostriderz. Each team scored within the first five minutes of the game and then the defense from each side shut down the opposing team's offense with the game ending in a 1-1 tie. The Ghostriderz scored on an unassisted goal by Daniel Cornejo. The Rockets chalked up their score to another perfectly executed corner kick pass from Matthew Arensdorf and a powerful reverse spin kick from Ryan Connolly.
The final scores in Saturday's games were a 2-2 tie with the San Jose Steamrollers, a 1-3 loss to the Hollister Free Wheelers, and a 1-1 tie against the Central Valley Ghostriderz. With the results from Saturday's games the Rockets are now 5-6-3 for the 2013 season.
The San Jose Rockets were on fire this past Saturday, winning three out of three games in decisive victories over their opponents from Santa Barbara, Hayward, and Berkeley. Each of the Rockets scored at least one goal, with several of the players scoring multiple goals in each game. While the Rockets offense was extremley productive, their defense was perfection, shutting out each of the three visiting teams.
The Rockets increased goal production over previous games can be attributed to their ability to pass the ball more effectively and working together as a team.
In the house for Saturday's games were Analisa and Mel from the Bay Area Breeze, a woman's professional soccer team. Both Analisa and Mel were very impressed with the aggressive play of the San Jose Rockets and are looking forward to working out with them in future practices.
The final scores in Saturday's games were 10-0 over the Santa Barbara Rollin' Rebels, 5-0 over the Hayward Kryptonite Pride, and 14-0 over the BORP Bombers from Berkeley. With the three wins in Saturday's games the Rockets improve their season record to 5-5-1.
